Transcript of Louis Comfort Tiffany

* Tiffany was fascinated with all things artistic and choose not to enter into his family's jewelry and luxury goods store.

* While studying in high school, at a Military Academy, his favorites classes were in painting and drawing. Once graduated he decides to study art.

* He travelled to Europe and studied painting. He often painted nature scenes. He was also highly influenced by the stained glass windows of Gothic Cathedrals in Paris.

* He also traveled to Northern Africa, Palestine and Spain, which would influence his art throughout his life. Patterns and colors from these places would make an appearance in his paintings, interior decor and glass work.

*Returned home to New York but instead of retuning to the family home on 5th Ave, he moved into the YMCA and lived among other artists. He became acquainted with Oscar Wilde and was influenced by his artistic vision.

*Married Mary Woodbridge Goddard in 1872. They had four children with three surviving infancy. He later remarried following Mary's passing from tuberculosis. He married Louise Wakeman Knox in 1886, and they had four children (including twin daughters.)
Charles Tiffany
Tiffany dedicated his life to the pursuit of beauty. However, his interest was not simply in art for its own sake. He believed people should surround themselves with beauty in all ways possible. His art was usually functional, which earned him a reputation as America's first industrial artist.

*1885, Tiffany establishes his own company, focused on glass manufacturing. He does this mainly because he wants to leave the impurities in the glass and is unable to find glass makers who want to do this.

*He developed a new way to make glass - called opalescent window glass, where several colors were combined and manipulated to create a vast range of hues. His factory produced over 5,000 different colors of glass used in his designs.
Building a Reputation
* 1876 - At the age of 24, he begins studying the chemistry and techniques of glass making.

*1879- Joined with Candace Wheeler and Samuel Colman to create "Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists".

* 1881- Commissioned by Mark Twain & Cornelius Vanderbilt II to decorate their private homes.

* 1883- Commissioned by President Chester Arthur to decorate the White House residential rooms.
* 1890-1910

*Began in Europe but spread to the United States where it evolved to the Arts and Crafts movement.

* Focus was on natural forms found in nature and on the applied arts, such as decor, furniture and architectural design.

Light, Color, and Nature
* He used and trademarked the word,
Favrile
- from the French word for handmade, to describe his works of glass.

*Some of his lamps were first exhibited at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.

*He uses a variety of motifs, mostly from nature.

Opalescent Glass
At the time stained glass was made by painting clear glass with different colors of enamel. As you can see, Tiffany's way of making stained glass, brought out a greater variety of color and takes on the look of a painting instead of simply stained glass.
Like his windows - his lamps are re-owned for their iridescence, brilliant colors, and amazing motifs.

His lamps are a functional piece of art work.

Original Tiffany lamps have sold today for up to 3.5 million dollars. They are now reproduced by a company, called Dale Tiffany.
