Tiffany & Co. Wrote Donald Trump A Strongly Worded Letter

Tiffany & Co. wants to save the climate from Donald Trump


Tiffany & Co. is famous for its iconic blue boxes, but it appears it would rather be associated with another colour: Green. Yesterday the jeweller placed and ad in The New York Times and took to social media to proclaim its support for the United States remaining in the Paris Climate Agreement. The U.S. is one of 195 countries that signed the 2015 UN agreement to limit global temperature rise to below two degrees Celsius, but presidential advisors are split on whether to stay on. Rising temperatures will lead to increased glacial melt, flooding, heat weaves and drought. 

The post, below, captioned “Tiffany strongly supports keeping the U.S. in the #ParisAgreement” followed the news that Trump advisors pushed for the second time a meeting on whether to withdraw from the climate accord that was supposed to be held on Tuesday. During his campaign, Trump claimed he would axe U.S. involvement in the agreement, a view supported by Scott Pruitt of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Benefitting the environment and the diamond-mining typically don’t go hand-in-hand but Tiffany laid out plans to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in its 2015 Sustainability Report, a target that aligns with the accord’s aim to hit net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2100. Steps include sourcing all electricity from renewable sources, switching to LED lights in its stores, reducing commodity-driven deforestation from key supply chains by 2020 and creating Marine Protected Areas through The Tiffany & Co. Foundation. Tiffany also pledges responsible mining and uses metals from recycled sources and Kimberley-Process-certified gems. 

“Using our brand to advocate for this important issue… is one of the most important actions we can take. Tiffany has long recognized the importance of protecting our fragile planet for future generations, and our aspiration is to leave behind a world that is as beautiful and abundant as the one we inherited.” Anisa Kamadoli Costa, chief sustainability officer at Tiffany & Co., said in a statement to The Kit.

Reaction online has been split. (Shocker! Not.) Tiffany joins brands like Apple, Google, Gap, Unilever, Levi Strauss & Co. and more in a Ceres-led initiative to garner support for the Paris Climate Accord. They’re doing it for the children, kay?
