OOOOHHH. So hard to pic a favorite, but I’d say it’s a tie between Little House on the Prairie and Winnie the Pooh. Although Charlotte’s Web is such a bittersweet tale, I’ll always remember. I used to wish I was Laura Ingalls and still love those stories.

focusing on the wrong things while pregnant??

https://imageserve.babycenter.com/15/000/079/P4drmETAeGKDGzHIXdafrYV1d1ncMihb lmp1974nz 10/05/13 Hi Ladies Love to know what you think! I had a really interesting chat with a psychologist friend at work during the week. She raised the point that when we are preggers we spend a huge amount of time focusing on the birth, baby showers, nurseries, shopping ... And although these things are all important and help us bond with our new babies we need to spend more time focusing on being a parent. Learning about how babies brains develop in the first year, and how from thr moment they arrive how we interact with our bubs begins to shape them, sitting down with our partners and discussing things like, our views in discipline, religion, finance... Letting your partner know what your expectations are of him as a dad and vice versa. I had to agree with her! Still off to bunnings to choose paint colours, but also going to order a few books on bubs development to balance it out. Like 0 ••• Advertisement Share Add a comment

My DP & I have discussed many things including whether or not we believe in smacking a child. I'm lucky as myself & my DP were raised fairly similarly in a lot of ways so it makes major things not an issue as we're on the same page. I know I'm going to be a wee but more strict & that there will be a few hiccups along the way but I also know that our overall beliefs & hopes for our child are very similar. Just enjoy your pregnancy because it won't last - you've got 18 years to worry about that later. Reply Like 0 ••• https://imageserve.babycenter.com/15/000/079/P4drmETAeGKDGzHIXdafrYV1d1ncMihb change_of_heart 10/05/13

I agree with Orchalia. Its great to keep your eyes and ears open to the serious issues behind birth and becoming a parent but at the same time there are so many variables which can not be mapped out until you actually get to meet your baby. Our ability to accomplish the things we do through parenthood are mostly instinct.

There is absolutely no harm in indulging in all the fun stuff. Goodness knows how much we worry through pregnancy and in my experience this worry we have for our children is here to stay....

Reply Like 0 ••• https://imageserve.babycenter.com/6/000/079/T8R3rUpYvtL6RHzJtYdWGZlqL2UEJh3Q Glitter_Faerie 10/05/13 I have to agree with the posters above. Whilst it may seem shallow I am enjoying indulging in evey single second of nursery shopping, pregnancy and birth preperation, baby shower plans etc. I will only be pregnant with my baby once and I intend to enjoy it. Another point I'll make. I've been with my husband for 6 years. I wouldn't have married him or had a child with him if we weren't compatible in the ways we want to raise a Child/finances/religion etc so I don't think we need to spend time duscussing those things at the moment. And part of my birth/ pregnancy preperation has been to read about the first year of my babys life, development mile stones and things I need to do to encourage her as I'm sure rhe majority of the pregnant women on here have also. If someone I know said to me "your focussing to much on your pregnancy and not on your childs life" I'd be really upset with them. Pyschologist or not! Reply Like 0 ••• https://imageserve.babycenter.com/15/000/079/P4drmETAeGKDGzHIXdafrYV1d1ncMihb Louiseyanna 10/05/13 I think what's she trying to say is more so that we focus so much on pregnancy and birth we forget about the whole becoming a parent part and some women find taking their baby home very overwhelming at first for this reason. I think it's the same with marriage, too much focus is on the wedding and not on the actual marriage, spend the rest of your life together part. I'm sure this isn't true for everyone and most women in this forum seem pretty educated and wishing to discuss the serious issues as well as the fun so I think we are on track :) Reply Like 0 ••• https://imageserve.babycenter.com/19/000/151/EcG0f1mXxdUTuk1A5maEizSeFN1ccKMm Aoide 10/05/13 Yeee-eee-eees. I remember, when I got engaged last year and immediately bought half a dozen bridal magazines, a woman at work read me the lecture about thinking less of the wedding and focusing more on learning to be a good wife. I replied that I'd lived with this guy for seven years, if what he wanted was a good wife he's had ample time to go out and find one. Not that lmp1974nz hasn't made a great point - learning about babies' brains learn and develop has been the most exciting part for me so far, and I've been surprised by how much about what we know about good parenting today is actually counter-intuitive, and not at all instinctive. But I've also just bought the tiniest red shirt with an owl on it, that's so freaking adorable. I'm sure most of us are enjoying both sides. Reply Like 0 ••• https://imageserve.babycenter.com/15/000/079/P4drmETAeGKDGzHIXdafrYV1d1ncMihb lmp1974nz Original poster 11/05/13 Great points ladies! I think what my friend was saying was by all means enjoy all the fun bits about pregnancy but don't forget about the big picture. I know she sees alot of ladies who are dealing with post natal depression so sees ladies who are struggling with the realities of being a parent. Great to have feedback from such a bunch if ladies who seem to have a really well informed and balanced view. Aodie I agree, we have a 20 mth old boy and just found out we are having a girl and I am becoming obsessed with cute stuff with owls on it! In pink of course! Have a house full of diggers, trucks and usually dirt!! An interesting study that I read during uni showed that babies who were read a particular book by their mothers in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy preferred this book to other books read by their mothers in their first few weeks (tested through dummy sucking). I think that this specific study shows that babies are learning from before they are born and it is interesting to think about providing newborns with quality time to bond and providing them with many learning opportunities. I've been thinking about becoming a parent and have been having important discussions with my husband around parenting and development. At the same time I went shopping with DH today and layby'd all our nursery furniture, our pram and our car seat, which made me so excited and so happy, and made my DH so happy too, I think it is important to have a balance too, Cheers Tiffany 27 DH 28 First bub due September 16th Reply Like 0 ••• 1 2 First page | Last page Log in or sign up to post a comment!
