LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY (1848-1933)

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass. In particular he designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewellry, enamels and metalwork. He was the first Design Director at his family company, Tiffany and Co the world-famous jewellry and silver firm founded by his father Charles Lewis Tiffany.

“TIFFANY’S STUDIOS PRODUCED MAGNIFICENT LEADED-GLASS WINDOWS WITH THEMES THAT REFLECTED THE NATURAL WORLD”

Tiffany started out as a painter, but became interested in glass making from about 1875 and worked at several glasshouses in Brooklyn.

In 1879 he founded the Louis C. Tiffany Company, “Associated Artists.” They produced and made designs for wallpaper, furniture, and textiles. He later opened his own glass factory which specialized in producing stained-glass windows and glass mosaics. Tiffany’s leadership and talent, as well as connections, led this business to thrive.

In the following years, Tiffany produced jewellry, enamels, pottery, lamps in addition to his glass mosaics, and monumental stained-glass windows.

“COLOUR IS TO THE EYE WHAT MUSIC IS TO THE EAR” Quote Louis Tiffany

Tiffany’s aesthetic was based on nature believing this should be the primary source of design inspiration. His work is intoxicated by colour, he translates this into his glass, the lush palette found in flowers and plants. This fascination with nature and with extending the capabilities of this medium led to the exploration of other techniques.

In 1893 Tiffany introduced his first blown-glass vases and bowls, called “Favrile” This name, he declared, was taken from an old English word for handmade. Favrile glass quickly gained international recognition for its surface iridescence and brilliant colours.

At his death 1933 Louis Comfort Tiffany was a world leader of the Art Nouveau movement. His unique response to the beauty of nature, coloured gemstones, glass and for his fanciful jewellery continue to brighten museums, banks, hospitals, hotels lobbies and more!
